Dofollow Links in the comment section

Not A Fanatic

I finally got round to changing the attribute in blogger to dofollow. I'm sure many of you are wondering what the hell I am blabbering on about, eh? I'm also sure that many of you have commented on a blog or website and noticed that little field where it asks for a website, well, that ain't there for the fun of it. If a site is dofollow, then that field can mean a potential boost in both traffic, and search engine rankings for your own website or blog.

Normally what you will see is three or four fields; name/username, URL/website, email, and comment; similar to the image below.

The first is self explanatory, so we will ignore that one, it is the second and fourth that we are interested in. If you have a website, blog or article that you are trying to promote, paste the URL into the URL/website field - by doing this you are changing your chosen username into a clickable link - that link leads back to the URL you pasted into the name/username field.  Now for the next two fields.  You need to enter a working email address in the field provided, and in the comment field post something that is relevant to the website/article/post you are visiting.  This leads me to another point that I feel is important in getting the highest traffic returns from dofollow sites.  For best results you should utilise dofollow sites that share a common theme with the site you are trying to promote - great minds think alike - and anyone clicking on your link is expecting to learn something more about the subject you are commenting on.  If, instead, they find what they consider to be a spammed link to an unrelated site, they are unlikely to spend more than a few seconds there before they leave the site and never give it another thought.  Ok, so you have got a clickable link, and anyone who knows about them, or just happens to notice it, may visit your site.  However, there is a lot more to it than that.  The fact that you are leaving a comment on a dofollow site means that whenever search engines crawl that site, they will crawl your link as well.  This can be a great way to increase the page rank of your blog/site, by effectively piggy-backing off the popularity of another site.

Now that my blog is dofollow, fellow bloggers and webmasters will be more likely to comment on the blog (I hope), granted; it is by no means a guarantee of instant traffic, but it's a step in the right direction.  What I would advise though, is if you are going to change this feature, it may be an idea to only allow moderated comments, that way you can weed out any unwanted links.  Dofollow equals spammer heaven, and unfortunately that means that a lot of sites and providers have disabled the feature as default.  I must stress again that it is in the best interest of every blogger and webmaster not to abuse these sites, otherwise more and more people will follow suit and disable the feature.

Time for the real geeky stuff - how to change your blogger site to dofollow.  I am a big believer in giving credit where credit is due, so for this part of the post I am going to direct you to the site that showed me how to change the nofollow attribute to dofollow - You can find the site here.  I hope this will help you all increase your traffic, and if anyone has any other SEO tips, leave a comment, and don't forget to link to your site!

  1. I've also recently allowed dofollow comments on my personal blog. Askimet still does a great job with weeding out the spam comments, and I've been getting a lot more visibility since everyone wants a backlink. Thanks for promoting dofollow on yours as well!
